Eye Opener: Photo Essay

I chose to do my photo essay on craft projects you can do with children made from recycled or used items. I chose this because I thought it would be something fun to do and it was a different twist to the idea of the photo essay. I chose to take a picture before hand of the recycled or used items that I used in order to make the craft and then I took an "after" picture to show off the new craft.

The first craft I did was to make a "kazoo". I remember making these in elementary school and I figured that I could use recycled things to make this. The products I used were markers I had, a rubber band, a toilet paper roll, paper I was just going to recyle, and a scissors.

This is what the kazoo turned out to look like. It was a really easy craft to make and children could do it easily. They also would have a lot of fun with it!

This next project I did I used an egg carton that my house was just going to recycle, some pennies, and some old paint to make a homemade game of "mancala".

This is the final outcome of the game. You can use the paint to paint it however you'd like and then use the pennies to play the game mancala. Kids will really like this because they get to use paint and also because they get to learn a new game!

This next project I did used recycled papers from a class my roommate had, staples, tape, and a scissors. This project will turn out to be a snowflake. I made these in elementary school and it was a fun project to do around wintertime and hang up around the house.

This is the final outcome of the snowflake. If you used all blue or all white kids could make some cool decorations for your house! It's also a pretty fun project!

This next project is one that was really clever and an idea I found on the interent. I used an old hot pad, thread, and a needle. I sewed the hot pad in half to make a new glasses case. This is a project for kids a little older since you are sewing but it was really fun!

This is the final outcome of the new glasses case. It actually works pretty well too at keeping your glasses safe!

These are just a few ideas of the old things that you can make into new projects! It was actually pretty fun for me to make these projects so children would really enjoy them!

  1. I LOVE the snowflakes! I had learned to do that last week and had never seen it before. The glasses case is also really smart. I would have never thought about doing that! I have 5 nieces and nephews, these projects would be fun to do with them over Christmas break!

  3. Neat project! I love making mancala boards from old egg cartons. I also used to enjoy making guitars from empty tissue boxes, rubber bands, and an empty roll from paper towels! Like Kara, I have 7 nieces and nephews who would have the most fun making these crafts (I have to admit I would enjoy making them myself! haha!).

  4. These are all really neat ideas. The glasses case one is great because I'm sure it's expensive to buy glasses cases from the eye doctor, so why not use materials around the house to create one. This is what all daycares and preschools should do for projects, just used leftover and recycled objects to create things.

  5. All of these items can be EASILY found in anyone's households, and is such a crafting project if you're feeling bored on a snowy day, or if you're babysitting your little cousins (or whoever!). Who says that fun has to come at an expense?!

  6. I think all these ideas/crafts are so cute! I always wanted to make my own Mancala game! Now I know of an easy way to make it and what colors to paint with! Many of these crafts are not practiced anymore but seeing them does bring back good memories. I always did enjoy making those snowflakes! Thanks for sharing these ideas!
