Reflection: Week 1-4

Weeks 1-4 Summary:
In class the past few weeks we have talked about several different topics. One main topic that we talked about in several different classes was our blogs. We learned how to set up our entire blog, how to comment and make links, the correct way to write a post, and about blogging etiquette. We also saw a 60-minute special called Rewriting the Science, which talked about how our government has always tried to change or hold information from us about the environment. This past week we also discussed our ecological footprint and learned about the effect we have on the earth. We then had a guest speaker come in to talk to us about how UMD is trying to be environmentally friendly and about the Bagely Outdoor classroom.

Things I have learned:
One major thing I learned about myself during these last few weeks is that I am not very environmentally friendly. If everyone lived like I do it would take 4.2 Earths to survive. This has changed how I view the environment a lot because I realize that you must make big changes and consciously think about what we are doing each day. One thing I am trying to do in order to be more environmentally friendly is carpool instead of driving alone.

One thing I learned about blogging is that it really is a good tool to use in the classroom and educating people. I think this is a better way of communicating with people rather than Moodle or WebVista because we are able to have our personalities shine through our blogs with pictures and layouts.

These past few weeks I have also learned that the environment is a very fragile thing. If we do not start making even small changes our Earth will continue to rapidly change and that will not be good for our living environment. Hopefully, by educating more people they will want to pick up on the change as well.

Impact:
I believe over the past few weeks I have learned things that will change my behavior towards the environment. I can already see slight changes. I am consciously thinking about the environment a lot more such as when I'm throwing away an item or when I leave the room. I am recycling items I never have before, turning off more lights, turning my fan off when I leave the house, etc. I think this class has shown me that my behaviors need to change as well as others in order to make an impact.

  1. I am glad we are taking this class. I really had no idea that there were so many little things we can do to help the environment. I too have learned a lot so far!

  2. I agree with a lot of things that you have stated. This class has really been interesting to me and opened up my eyes on a lot of issues that I was not so aware about before. Blogging is also something that I had never done before and it is a new tool that is really good for our classroom use.

  3. Like you, I have also made some little changes in my lifestyle to become more green. I am going to ride the bus to school instead of taking the car. This class has really opened my eyes and made me think more about the environment.

  5. That's so awesome that you are already starting to make little changes to help out the environment! It's nice to think that if everyone begins to pay more attention to how they live then we may be able to help the earth sustain a lot longer!

  6. In the past four weeks I have learned a lot as well. Like you, I learned that I am not as eco-friendly as I thought. I am trying to change a few habits in being more eco-friendly.
