Eye Opener: CSPI

For this assignment I took the "Score Your Diet" quiz. My ending score was a 9, which ranges in the lowest category of "Uh-oh, you need help!". One food I scored the lowest on was cheese. I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and as you know we love our cheese there. So I guess it has always just been habit to eat cheese a lot for me. Another category I scored pretty low in was chicken and turkey category. I usually have a turkey sandwhich everyday for lunch because it is convienent and a healthier choice than other things like peanut butter and jelly. Also, I love chicken so it usually tends to be part of a meal at least once a week. I did score high in the fruit category because I try to eat fruit for snacks and for lunch most days. I also scored high in the whole grains category because I usually have a sandwhich a day which I use whole wheat bread. Also I do eat a lot of oatmeal.

I think one area I need to work on is animal welfare. I think this because I do not buy many organic foods so therefore I am just reinforcing bad behaviors done by farmers and manufacturers. They do not treat animals very well and feed them things that are expensive to produce. Buying organically helps to eliminate some of these problems, which will improve our environment greatly.

Summary:
Overall, I know I have many things that I can work on to improve my impact on the environment. I need to eat less beef, turkey, and chicken and need to eat more fruits and vegetables. I also could try harder to buy organically when I can and to eat less dairy products. All of these things are ideas that are will effect the way I live my life but if I slowly change my behaviors I think it is something I can accomplish. This means to me that I am trying to improve myself to help improve our Earth, which is something I think everyone should try to start to do as well.

  1. I did not take this quiz, I toured the food supply. I am interested to see where I would have scored if I would have taken this quiz, I love cheese too.

  2. I too need to work on eating less animal products and more fruits and veggies. It is hard to eat them though because they always get bad so fast!

  3. I personally need to work on eating less animal products and also more organic foods. Its hard with the fast paced world we live in to eat healthy home cooked foods. Half the time I barely have 5 minutes to run through the drive-thru for dinner in between work, school, and the rest of life.

  4. I didn't take this quiz but I think this quiz would tell me the same thing that the quiz I took told me. The other quiz told me that I should eat less meat and more vegetables and fruits.

  5. I have to agree with Calista about the fact that I do need to eat more fruits. However, the set-back I have is that it seems whenever I purchase fruit that is the only food I can eat for the next week, otherwise, it goes bad. Anyone know how to can fruit?
