Ashley: Calculate your Auto Emissions
My total pounds of CO2 emissions was 8,230.87. It was a little less than some others of the group but I kind of expected (and hoped) that it would be since my car is so small. I usually get pretty great gas milage and was thinking this would all take into affect the emissions it produces because it is so small. It says that it has 34 HWY MPG which I think is pretty good for a 2004 used car! Overall, I learned a lot with this project. I was able to actually know that my car IS using less emissions than most others but still have LARGE room for improvement!
Elly: How Big is Your Footprint?
After doing this emissions calculator I found that my vehicle produces 1.67 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per year! This is CRAZY to me. I do drive more than the average person I think because I work out in Hermantown and live down in central Duluth. I also live 5 hours from home so driving home accounts for a lot of miles and emissions as well. This was a very eye opening experience to me. Sadly, there is not much I can do to change this though. There is no bus system that runs to my job location and I do not work full days so I cannot carpool. I can try to lessen this by carpooling home, however!
Jamie: Get Fit
After taking the self quiz I did about average. This is what I kind of thought. It said I have the right idea but sometimes other things get in the way of me exercising or even wanting to exercise. Either way I'm still doing a lot more than most Americans are, which is encouraging! I thought this quiz was a great indication of how fit we actually are. I think if you were honest on the quiz you will get honest answers. I also like that it gave you ideas to help improve yourself!
Kara: Energy Dustbin Game!
This was a fun, quick quiz. I only got one wrong. I did not know that Albert Einstein had a hand in Non-renewable energy ideas! It's funny how far back these things go yet we still haven't seem to master them or even make them the majority of our energy sources. This was a fun way to test your knowledge and it was something different than just a written quiz. It's cool that these tools are all over the internet for us to use!
Lauren: Workout Plan!
I found this quiz very inacurate for myself. It said that I am only 10% fit? I work out usually 3 days a week. I don't think that would mean I am only 10% fit. I also eat semi-heatlhy so I don't think that factors into the 10% either? I don't know how this got so scewed but I don't think it is a very good representation of my health. If the answers would have been more accurate I think I would have benefitted from this quiz a little more. I know it was the right idea but I'm not sure how they calculated their results! I do like all the tips for work out plans though! They are great, thanks.
Katie: Obesity and Your Everyday Life
I liked the "Steps to a Healthier You" website. It gives great tips for various locations where you are eating like your home, a restaurant, or a fast-food restaurant. My BMI is in the normal category, which is good. I am torn about if BMI is an accurate way to measure body fat. I wonder how it takes muscle into consideration. If you have a lot of muscle (muscle weighs more than fat) than does your BMI go up? I try to keep under the recommended amount of calories per day but some days (like most thinks) are harder than others. I am not meeting the recommended amounts for veggies or fruits. I usually consume about 2 fruits a day and if lucky one veggie. I don't like most veggies so this is hard for me. I know this is something I need to improve on however. I chose Elliptical Trainer as my activity because that is what I like to do the most and it said that I probably burn about 422 calories per half hour session. These are great acitivities to get people aware!
I also got 10% on the fitness quiz. I wasn't too sure how accurate this test is either. I however don't work out as much as you do, but I don't think I'm only 10% fit. I eat a mixture of foods that are good for me and some that aren't so good. I was also surprised that renewable energy dated as fat back as Einstein! Good job completing all the activities, it seems as though you've learned a lot!
ReplyDeleteFitness & wellness seemed to be a popular one in our group. Three of the activities were related to this topic and all three gave new, helpful information. The other two activities were about CO2 emissions, it was fun to compare those results as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat work on completing all of these assignments! I think you did a great job on each and offered good comments on them. Good reflection on your experience!
ReplyDeleteI liked that steps to healthier you website too, it was very colorful and had a lot of information. Awesome that you get 34 MPG on your car! I always think about driving less, too, but then I think about how I would get to my job, etc. Our lifestyles revolve around driving our cars, and that's something that I wish could change.
ReplyDeleteLike you and Lauren, I really liked the steps to a healthier you page. It really gave good tips on how to be more physically fit and healthier in general. I was not too sure about the fitness quiz either. I think it just threw out a ballpark. I'm glad you enjoyed doing the activities!
ReplyDeleteI have some of the same problems with driving. I cannot carpool to school because I have different schedules than my roommates, and I don't live close enough to school to ride the bus the whole way. What I do though, is drive to my friends on 4th st. and get on the bus there, so I am producing a little less pollution due to just making that extra effort.
