This week I am choosing to write about 'Buy Nothing Day'. Buy Nothing Day is 'observed' in 65 coutries and this year is held on Saturday, November 27th. This day is an international day of protest against consumerism. People do not spend money for an entire day on November 27th if they are participating in this day.
The reason why I chose to write about this for my environmental blog is because 'Buy Nothing Day' has a direct impact on the environment. People who participate in this day are bringing light to the impact that consumers have on the environment. Mostly everything we buy has a negative impact on the environment in many different ways. This idea leads to the lead that we don't need all this "stuff" around Christmas time. There are plenty of other things we can do for our loved ones to show that we care. We can even reuse things like with our "junking project" to give as gifts during the Christmas holiday! Think about it! :)
I've been hearing more and more about "buy nothing day" lately. I wasn't very familiar with it before but I seem to be gaining more knowledge about it. It sounds like a good way to get a point across and show people just how much impact they can have on the economy and market. Although, I think there are many people who are set in their ways and wouldn't participate in this event because they've always gone shopping on the day after Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on taking part on this "buy nothing day" I'm interested in finding out just exactly how many people purposely don't go out, and maybe they'll receive projections on the decrease in sales on that particular day! It is kind of hard though for a lot of people... It's right after Black Friday and I feel like everyone might still be out looking for deals.
ReplyDeleteI have actually been hearing quite a lot about this day. There was even a 2 guys dressed as presents walking with a giant banner in the Christmas City of the North Parade last Friday. I think it is a great concept since consumerism is such a big issue in our country.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree! This year for secret santa, I asked my friends and I to be creative and sort of junk our things or things we have not used into craft presents. Its the thought that counts and the time you do put in it for your friends.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this day but I feel people in the United States should celebrate this day, except instead of having it on Saturday we should try having it in place of 'Black Friday.' I feel that might throw some people through a loop and could possibly make them realize that often people purchase items they really don't need. I know I'm going to celebrate 'Buy Nothing' Day! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea! I also stumbled upon "Support Local Business Saturday". I've never been to Black Friday but I hear about people just turning into the crabbiest people ever. It doesn't sound appealing at all. I guess I unconsciously celebrate "Buy nothing day" every year, and will continue to do it in the future.
